How to take care of your flash memory

To minimise data loss and ensure the best results from your Flash storage device, follow these simple recommendations:

Replace or recharge batteries in devices after getting a low-battery warning

Battery discharge is one of the most common problems causing the loss of pictures or other data on Flash storage devices. If a battery dies in the middle of a write operation to the Flash storage device, not only can the file being written become corrupted, but the entire device may be damaged as well. For example, if the File Allocation Table (FAT) directory file update is incomplete and the FAT file is corrupted, some or all files on the Flash storage device may no longer be accessible.

However, it may be possible to repair the Flash storage device using commercially available disk recovery software. Even with these recovery programs, some data or files on the Flash storage device may still be lost, but the rest may be recoverable. To avoid these problems, carry a spare battery if possible or stop using a device when battery power gets very low.

Properly remove your Flash storage device from the host device

It is important to wait until all operations are completed before removing a Flash storage device from a digital camera or other host device. If the Flash storage device is removed during a write operation, for example, the Flash storage device may be corrupted and data loss may occur. Most digital cameras will show a blinking light during Flash write operations, so it is important to wait until all operations are completed.

For example on my PCs, to stop my DataTraveler’s USB connection I go through Windows (In Windows XP, use the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the system tray). For my DataTraveler Elite drives, i use MyTraveler’s Eject button. Computers often “cache” data into memory and may delay the write to USB Flash drives. As a rule of thumb, it is advisable to wait a minimum of two minutes after you finish writing data to a USB drive.

Properly store Flash cards in their plastic cases and close the cap on your USB drives.

Flash storage devices, while quite reliable, can be damaged when dropped on hard surfaces. When they are not in use, store Flash storage cards in their clear plastic cases. In addition, static electricity can also damage Flash storage devices. For example, on dry days, a person can generate enough static electricity to cause a spark while touching a doorknob or other metal objects (this is called electro-static discharge or ESD). My DataTraveler USB drive is designed to resist high levels of electro-static discharge; however, extreme levels of ESD may still cause damage.

Do not force Flash storage devices into connectors.

Flash card or USB Flash drive connectors are unidirectional. This means that the Flash storage device must be inserted in one direction only; if you cannot insert the drive or card, do not force it in. This will prevent damage to the Flash storage device or the socket.

Pack Flash storage devices into carry-on luggage if possible.

Tens of millions of Flash storage devices are in use worldwide and there have been no verifiable reports of Flash storage damage due to airport X-ray scanners.

A 2004 study by the International Imaging Industry Association (I3A) verified that today’s airport X-ray machines do not appear to be a risk to flash memory cards. When I bought my DataTraveler USB drives, Kingston recommended that they be treated just like unprocessed film and stored in carry-on luggage, as the passenger screening radiation levels are much lower than those used by newer luggage scanning machines.

Always make backups of your data

Having said all this, Flash storage devices are not infallible and can have their data damaged due to factors mentioned above. It is important to backup important information on multiple media or even print data on paper for long-term storage. Do not store important data solely on Flash storage devices.

How to Resolve ‘The drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?’ Error and Restore Data

The inception of digital cameras, even in the devices like mobile phones, has made it possible to click even the tiniest moments of our lives. These digital cameras (even the inbuilt cameras in phones) have the property to transfer the clicked photos to our computers and most of us avail this advantage as well. In order to keep the copy or sometimes free up space on our digital camera memory card, we transfer our invaluable photos to our computers. Moreover, some of us even send these photos to external data storage devices like external hard drive for keeping them safely.

Therefore, in order to prevent data loss, we generally do not keep our precious photos in our camera. However, observing these precautions too does not guarantee that your photos are completely safe and secure. This is because of the file system corruption on the data storage device. The corruption of data storage device like hard drive of your computer, external hard drive of your computer, or the memory card wherein your photos are stored, generally results in an error message. One such error message is:

“The drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”

After getting this error message, when you go to ‘Disk Management’, you will find that the affected disk is healthy, but it does not have any file system and drive letter. These kinds of drives are generally known as ‘RAW’ drives, which mean they are not prepared to be used with the Operating System (OS) or the data cannot be read due to the corruption. Since every disk needs to be formatted with a file system before use, due to the raw nature of the file system of this disk, you get this ‘drive not formatted’ error message.

A disk generally becomes RAW when it encounters severe virus infection or sudden power failure.  Some practical examples of getting the drive error are:

Mathew, a Windows 2000 user, encountered this error message suddenly when he was trying to fix the problem with the sound card of his system. Prior to getting this error message, he was able to access the drive with all its contents, but then he suddenly got the error message “Disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”. He lost the accessibility of all the data stored on this drive. Moreover, he lost the accessibility of this complete drive itself. In his problem, he states that before encountering this problem, the file system of this ‘E’ drive was FAT32, but now it is RAW. He needs some solution for this problem, as he uses this drive as a backup drive for storing his precious photos and videos.

Similar problem occurred with Eliza, who uses Windows XP:

Eliza says that for quite a long time, she has been using an external hard drive for backing up her invaluable image and video files. Few days back, when she attached her external drive to her computer for taking the backup of some recent photographs, she encountered an error stating that ‘the disk in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?’. After this error message, she lost the accessibility of the entire drive. Moreover, the drive letter along with the file system of the drive was not visible in disk management; instead, she could see a RAW drive.

What to Do When Come Across Such Issues:

Since this error message creates inaccessibility of the drive, to conform the option to format your drive remains the only way to make your disk accessible. As we know formatting causes complete data loss, all your images, photos, videos, or all other data stored on your drive is deleted. In such situation, if you have the backup of your data, then you can easily overcome the loss. However, you should not worry even in the unavailability of the backup, as for such situations, use of professional software is recommended.

A reliable commercial image recovery tool recovers all deleted or formatted files from the drive. However, after performing the format, you should not use your drive until the recovery software does its job. This precaution is for avoiding the overwriting of formatted data else you will never be able to restore data.

The formatting of data storage drive does not cause data loss instantly; instead, it only reinstalls the file system and the data remains at its place physically intact. However, due to the changed file system, you are unable to find anything on your drive. Moreover, the newly installed file system marks all the space free to be reused, despite the fact that old data is there at its place. However, if you perform further format or saving of new files, then chances of overwriting of older ones are quite high. Since a formatted file is impossible to be recovered even by the most efficient recovery software, it is suggested to observe this precaution.

If you do not use your formatted drive and use professional software immediately, then you can easily recover your lost files and folders and undo the loss. Most of the tools of this category support the recovery of all kinds of multimedia files and are available separately for Windows and Mac users. However, the steps of recovery are almost the same for both the Operating Systems. Generally, all tools have three simple steps of recovery, which can be explained as:

  • Select: First, install the software on your computer, and then attach the affected external hard drive to this system. However, if the error is encountered with the hard drive of your computer itself, then download the software to any other computer and attach your computer’s hard drive to this system. After that, run the tool and select your affected data storage media. In case of data loss and the same error in memory cards, it is suggested to attach the memory card with the help of a card reader.
  • Scan: After you have started the software and selected your affected hard drive, click an option to start the scanning of this drive. Generally, all efficient tools of this category provide the preview of recoverable files after completion of the scanning process. With this preview, you can select or deselect the files for recovery.
  • Save: As you have selected the drive for recovery and chosen the files itself, click the option to recover them. After successful completion of the recovery process, select the option to save the recovered files. Some tools provide automatic option for the saving of recovered files; however, go for an appropriate option and save your recovered photos, videos, and other media files at your preferred location.

You have to work wisely and obey all the precautions and proper steps for the recovery. Losing hope does not solve your problem; instead, opting for an appropriate solution according to your problem is recommended.

First time Mover from iPhone to Android? Here are some tips

Switching from iPhone to Android is complicated if you don’t know few basic facts. If you are ready to make the switch, start by buying a high-end Android phone which has at least more than 4.3 inch screen, 1.2 GHz dual core processor, and high resolution screen display. Once you have purchased the device, here are few things to follow for making the switch.

1.Optimize Home Screen

Unlike the iPhone where you have to stick to some default icons set to the home screen, you can pay around a lot with Android. Here, you can download and install your favorite apps and set them as home screen icons and swipe them as well. Android features  ‘widgets’ as well as Application shortcuts on it’s home screen, so you can get updates from the apps without actually opening up the app. Getting to know Android will take some time and to make it easier for you, I suggest getting familiar with the Home and Menu buttons. Most of the activities on any Android device are centered on these buttons.

2. Syncing Apps

One of the major drawbacks you will come across during the switch is app incompatibility. Android and iPhone apps are completely incompatible. Therefore, you will lose access to all apps once you switch. You have to download and install them again. So note down the installed apps and re-install them. However, some app developers offer an iPhone and Android version of the same app and if the user data is stored on their servers or the cloud, you will not lose important data.

3. Gmail is Compulsory

Like the new Nokia Lumia series makes Microsoft Outlook email account essential to sync all data, you need to use a Gmail account to use Android. The primary Gmail account will be used to store data and hold your account details including payment methods for paying for apps you’ll buy on Google Play App store. Nevertheless, if you still wish to access emails from non-Gmail accounts, you can do that via IMAP, POP3 or Microsoft Exchange setting. Before switching, finalize the Gmail account you wish to use. Ensure no one else uses it. Lastly, you have to use the same Exchange system to transfer contacts and calendar notes from iPhone to Android.

4. Media Transfer

To transfer pictures, music files and videos, you need to transfer them to your PC via USB connection. Mac users can use the Image Capture tool to backup images. Once done, remove the iPhone device from PC, connect the Android device and transfer all the files. If the device runs on ICS or above, install the Android File Transfer Utility on the Mac to transfer media files. Further, you will also find that the device does not sync with iTunes; therefore, your alternatives would be to use Google Play or Amazon Cloud Player.

5. Transferring SMS and Voice Mail

You can use iSMS2Droid tool to transfer your Text messages from iPhone to your new Android phone. The steps are not too straight forward, but here’s a  link to instructions on how to go about this.

Transferring voice mails is a bit more time consuming. The easiest way is to transfer the voicemails to the forwarding them to your Google mail account and then accessing them on the Android device.

[googleplay url=””]

6. Battery Life

Even though Android is really enjoying popularity, its drawback is its battery life. Some high-end devices do have better battery life but they are not affordable for everyone. Hence, if you want to save on battery, I recommend you to switch off 4G, Wi-Fi and GPS when not in use. If you are not using social media accounts, disable them. You can enable them again with just a tap.

7. Android App Store

After the switch, say bye-bye to Apple app store. The Android device will use Google Play as its default app market. You can still search, download and install from alternate marketplaces if you enable the option, but it is risky and you should install virus protection software before downloading from other app stores.
Making the switch from iPhone to Android will take some time but don’t you worry. Just follow the above pointers.

How to restart a Hung Lumia 920 or any Windows Phone

Nokia Lumia 920

Yesterday, after a lot of WiFi tethering and heavy use of the Lumia 920, the phone finally hung on me. On my drive back home, the device seemed to try restart on it’s own and got stuck in the startup screen with the Nokia Logo. I couldn’t do anything much while driving to get the device back in operation.

Once I got back, I tried the regular method of trying to shutdown the phone by keeping the power button pressed, but that didn’t help even after keeping the button pressed for a long time. After some googling, i found that the Windows Phone equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+Del  is actually Volume Down and Power button.

So to restart your non-responsive Windows Phone device, all you need to do is to simultaneously press the Volume Down and the Power button, and keep it pressed till you see the phone shut down or you feel the phone vibrate quickly a few times. You can then release the buttons and then press the power button to start  the phone again.

Top tips and tricks to master your iPad

While there are quite a few tips that are common to both the iPhone and the iPad, here are a few more that could make using your iPad just a little bit more fun and intuitive.

Multitasking Gestures – You can enable multi-tasking gesture controls through General -> Settings -> Multitasking Gestures. By setting toggling multitasking gestures to ON, it is possible to swap 4 to 5 applications on the screen by swapping your fingers.

Wireless Sync  – After plugging the iPad to your personal computer, you should ensure that both iPad and PC are connected to the same wireless network. You should enable iTunes on your PC and then select Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. You should select from the list, the computer with which you wish to connect. All the data between iPad and PC will be synchronized everytime both the computer and the iPad are on the same WiFi network

Data destruction – If your iPad lands into the wrong hands and if you don’t want to let loose the sensitive information contained in it, the only option will be to kill the data. This can be achieved when a person unsuccessfully tries to login after a set number of times. You can select the erase option under Settings -> General -> Password Lock.

Side switch – You can assign different functionality to the side switch. The functionality can be toggled by selecting from the menu, Settings -> General -> Use side switch to. Whatever function you would like to assign to the side switch can be selected at ‘use side switch to’.

Encrypted backup – It is possible to take a backup of your iPad’s data in encrypted form through iTunes. After opening iTunes, select Summary Tab and select the option under ‘Encrypt iPad Backup’.

To set restrictions on usage – You can set restrictions on usage of applications, content, games, etc by using Settings -> General -> Restrictions. You can enable restrictions to whichever application you want.

To bypass the default password – Usually iPad comes with 4 digit default password. You can remove the default password and apply a choice of your own that will be more difficult to crack. This can be achieved through Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock. By setting a new encrypted password, you will be able to encrypt your emails as well.

To remove Wi-Fi network – It is possible that your iPad might have been connected to a Wireless network accidentally. As a matter of fact, the connection will be stored forever in your iPad. If you wish to remove that connection, you can do so by going through Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Choose the Network. Tap the button which says ‘Forget this Network’.

To control iPad notifications – If you wish to control annoying notifications that appear on top of your iPad, you can follow these steps. Settings -> Notifications. Here, you should configure alerts as per your requirements including the audio tone.

Trash your emails on Gmail when you delete them from your Windows Phone

I’m sure most people who access their mails from Gmail on a Windows Phone have seen this issue. When you delete the emails on your phone, the emails still stay in your Inbox of Gmail when you access it from the web.

I access my emails while I’m out and scan through quite a bit of them and delete the unwanted emails so I don’t have to look at them later. Now when I get back to the PC, they’re still in my Gmail Inbox when I check on the web; Undeleted. *grumble*. This is an irritant, since I’ve now got to go and delete them all over again in the web interface.

There seems to be no settings I could see of in Windows Phone to get over this behaviour and get Gmail to actually “Trash” the emails when I deleted them from my phone. I’m not sure who’s at fault here Google or Microsoft, but there should be some way to get over this problem.

Google Sync Settings to the Rescue

Hidden away in a special URL ( is where you can get this done. Head over to that URL from your Phone’s Browser, and you’ll be prompted to enter your Google Account details. Don’t bother using your desktop browser, it doesn’t work. You’ll have to use Internet Explorer on your phone for this task.

Once you log in with your details, you’ll land up on a screen where you can see a list of phones and devices which you’ve used to access Gmail from (see the pic on the right). I was surprised to see quite a few of my older devices listed here, including the good old E71 including a “SmartPhone” (I wonder which one that was).

Now select your Windows Phone which you’re currently syncing with to get to the next screen where you get the magical setting. Here just check the option to “Delete Email As Trash for this device”, save the settings and you’re done.

The next time you get your emails, all you have to do is to delete the email on your phone and it’s “Trashed” in Gmail as well.

Happy Emailing. If you have other tips to share with us, do send us a tweet @myportableworld or leave us a comment below.

Data Recovery from Small Storage Devices

SD cards and USB drives are an easy way to transfer data from one electronic device to another device. You can easily transfer photos stored on SD card by inserting the card into the card reader slot on your laptop; it’s all just plug and play. Small storage devices are available at really low prices. Although there are plenty of tools to recover data from computer drives, there are fewer tools to recover data from small storage devices.

Data recovery from SD cards and USB sticks poses higher challenges than data recovery from computer’s hard disk. As there is the probability of losing the information by accidental deletion of data, it is required to possess data recovery tools to recover valuable information. With the available tools, you can perform data recovery activities very easily on your own computer. The SD card storage system gives you an opportunity to retain the data even though you had given a single delete command. Physically, you will not be able to see those deleted files, but they will not be lost completely from the sectors as long as the data is not overwritten or the card is formatted. This gives ample room for data recovery tools to effectively recover data from your SD card and Pen Drives.

Wondershare Photo Recovery really is a  wonderful software to recover data from SD cards. It is available for Mac and Windows-based computers. Depending on the version chosen, you will be able to recover photos, videos, audio files, document files, emails, etc. The procedure is very simple:

  • Install the software on your computer
  • Insert the card into the drive
  • Scan the card and you will be able to find the available files

The software can effectively deal with virus affected cards, accidental data deletion, corrupt card and many other malfunctions. Again, do note that overwriting or formatting the card will completely destroy the data that you wanted to recover.

PhotoRec is a versatile tool that can be used on Windows, Mac and Linux-based systems. The greatest advantage with PhotoRec is that even though it is titled in lines of photo recovery, the tool can recover almost any kind of data and from any kind of device. When you install the software and open the interface, the device will list all the memory devices and you can select the device from where the data has to be recovered. You can select the location where the recovered data have to be stored. The rest of the process is done automatically. Even though the software is available free of cost, the greatest disadvantage is with its text-based interface. However, with its powerful and versatile usage, advanced users can easily utilize the software to get the maximum benefit out of it.

Here’s an illustration showing you the steps to follow as well.

Tips for Usage of Google Calendar via Mobile SMS Alerts

Using web services and applications to ease your schedule orientation and plan your day, is an efficient use of the technology. Of the many options currently available for this situation, Google Calendar has been one of the most popular options. It is not difficult to understand the reason why most users prefer this application for their schedule planning around the year.

For one, it is a free program, Google is a top web brand, and the company constantly introduces new developments in the services and applications to make them even more efficient. However, one of the drawbacks, that most users face in this regards, is that they do not have the access to their schedule planned on Google calendar if they do not have an access to the Internet. While, the market is flooded with Smartphones, tablets and other portable devices that can help them get online on the go, these devices are not very cheap and do require a better awareness of technology to use them. Cell phones on the other hand, have the dynamics to be accepted widely and are quite common for most users in the world. There is a distinct advantage to linking your Google Calendar service to your cell phone. It solves the problem of portability of the days’ schedule and clears any conflict of technological and economic issues, which prevent you from adapting to the advanced time planning application.

Here is a detailed look at the way you can combine Google calendar service with your cell phone and access your schedule via regular sms alerts on your mobile.

Synchronize your Mobile with Google Calendar – You have to register your cell phone with Google calendar, in order for the service to recognize your number when you send in a request for notifications. To do this, just get in your Google calendar account and on the upper right corner of the page, click on “tool”. You will get an option list; pick the “calendar settings” to get the form for the cell phone set up. Fill in all the details in the form to align your cell phone with the Google calendar services. The procedure will include a number verification, where in you will be sent a validation code on your mobile and you have to confirm the code in the Google calendar program.

For each individual appointment notification, you can adjust the settings on each appointment slot, to send in automatic notification alerts to the verified number registered with the service. To do this, just go to the “Edit event” option in the particular appointment slot. In the “Reminders” section, arrange for the appointment notification to be sent in to your cell phone at the pre-scheduled hour.

Smart Tips for Better Efficiency – There are some essential tips that you should be aware of, to make use of the service smoothly. It is advisable to look in to an unlimited sms option for your cell phone to make sure that the calendar notifications do not cost you much. You can stop the sms alert any time by just going back to the calendar settings and changing your options in the mobile set up. When selecting your option in the appointment notifications set up, check on sms rather than pop-ups to avoid unnecessary notifications from flooding your inbox consistently. In addition, you can use the service to not just plan your day, but also set up alerts for monthly or even annual events.

The purpose of this service is to make sure you do not miss any important event or task in your life, orienting it with your cell phone ensures that you are kept updated, even when you are away from your computer.
