Android overtakes Symbian as leading smartphone platform

So it happened. Android finally takes over Symbian as the world’s best selling smartphone platform in Q4 2010 according to a report by Canalys.

Android beats Nokia, the leading user of the Symbian Platform, at number 2 and Apple at no. 3.  According to Canalys, Android-based smartphone shipments have reached 32.9 million, while shipment of Nokia’s Symbian-powered smartphones have reached 31.0 million. Despite this, Nokia retains its leading position for the whole of 2010 with a market share of 28%.
