Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – The Return of the Phablet

Samsung Galaxy Note II like it’s predecessor has become a showstealer, being a bridge between the phone and a tablet. The phablet! According to a recent news item, more than 5 million Galaxy Note II’s have been sold till date. Yup it is indeed big – the phone comes with a 5.5 inch screen which makes it to look stunning. At the same time, do not be afraid that you will have to hold a big block near your ears when you have to make a call. The phone is actually slimmer than the original Galaxy Note.

The size of the phone is the most debated element. Some find the phone to be OK after they’ve played with it a little bit; some men and women had no problems in sliding the phone to their pant pockets and/or handbag/purse, respectively. But, some find the phone to be too large to handle with one hand, especially when one has to reach the other end of the screen. Nevertheless, the big screen is a winner. The super AMOLED screen makes the experience excellent for media, games and graphics. The phone also overcomes the most popular bluish tint problem that is common with AMOLED displays.

Build – Samsung Galaxy Note II is available in two colors – Marble white and Titanium Gray. A hard silver color bezel runs around the glossy plastic corners of the device. In fact the Note 2 has borrowed it’s styling from the Galaxy S III, making this look like the bigger brother. Even though the device is ‘large’ the slim form factor of the phone makes it feel smaller than it actually is when you hold it. In fact the Note 2 is larger than the original Note!

Processor and Internals –  The device has a 1.6 GHz quad core processor, 2GB RAM and 16 to 64GB of internal memory (depending on the model you pick). You can add an additional of up to 64 GB of memory via a microSD slot. Due to the quad-core processor, switching between apps is smooth and swift; but the phone does lag behind when switching between the portrait and landscape views (this can however be locked if you don’t prefer the auto-rotate). The speedy processor also ensures that the apps and games you load on the device don’t lag.

Platform – The Galaxy Note 2 ships with Android Jelly Bean. Samsung has also added their TouchWiz interface on top of the Android layer. The Android Purists can always find things to niggle about this since it overrides some of the Android Jelly Bean interfaces, but the Touch Wiz should go well with most other Android users.

Stylus Pen – The phone comes with a more easy-to-use and handy stylus pen, which is redesigned from that of the original Note. Since it is not round and has squared off edges, the pen is easy to hold and helps keep away accidental presses and doesn’t slip off the hand. Even though the television ads show the S Pen working up it’s magic on the Note, a word of caution – it can be clunky at times and some of the features work well only with Samsung Apps. It’s a useful addition nevertheless for quick scribbles, annotations and notes on the fly.

Software – The camera software has many predefined shooting modes for efficient capture. One of the coolest features is the Best Face feature that lets you take multiple shots of group photos and the feature looks out for out-of-focus faces or faces that look away from the camera. The Best Face feature then combines the best faces (of individual persons) from the different shots to make a better photo. The camera is also able to quickly auto focus on moving objects and also changes orientation pretty fast. The front camera is 1.9 megapixels and helps with good quality video calls.

Battery backup –  The 3, 100 mAh battery can keep the phone up to 14 hrs of intense use (watching Youtube videos, streaming high quality songs etc), most users who end up getting the Note 2 is because of the battery life on this device – it just gones on and on, on a single charge.

Overall the phone excels in its performance, look and feel. I applaud  Samsung’s attempt to make Galaxy Note II a bridge between the phone & the tablet.

Find The Perfect Business Laptop – Here’s a Shortlist.

Laptops have become a part of our lives. Be it business or personal use, just like a smartphone, everyone wants to have a laptop of their own and consider it as a personal possession – and have it totally customized to their taste. Thanks to the technological advancement and the healthy competition among the top laptop manufacturing companies, we have a wide variety of laptops to choose from as per our needs.

When we choose a laptop for our business we go for certain special features as opposed to choosing a laptop for personal use. Yes, business laptops have to be durable, portable and powerful. They need to be stable given the fact that they will be used for extended hours (compared to a personal laptop), easy to carry for meetings, sometimes abroad, and should be able to withstand the intense usage and still respond fast!

Finding the perfect laptop for your business could be challenging taking into consideration these two facts –

1. You have specific requirements that demand a strong and powerful laptop when it comes to your business usage.
2. You have a wide variety of laptops to choose from.

Here is the deal – if you have point 1 ready, I am going to help you with point 2. Below is a shortlist of the best laptops that will suit your business requirements –

Toshiba Portege R935-P322 – This laptop comes under the ultra-portable category and is priced fairly lesser compared to the other laptops in this category. The laptop overtakes the past ultra-portables with a mobile processor which is certainly a plus; this reflects in the increased processing speed (especially with the multimedia tasks). The laptop has a battery life of 9+ hours. If you are after the ultra portability and fast processing speed that comes at a reasonably lower price, this is your piece.

Dell Latitude E6220 – This laptop also comes in the ultra-portable category but is a bit pricey for a 12.5 inch laptop. One of the coolest things about this laptop is that you can choose the battery settings that will allow you to travel light or use your laptop for computational purposes even for a day. I must admit that the laptop is not eye-catching or sleek, but it has a fast performance, the necessary components that a business will normally require and more importantly, warranty and service options that are expected by large business companies.

Lenovo Thinkpad T420 – Again, not a stylish-looking laptop but a workhorse that does the job. You can call it an all-purpose laptop with a solid build and a race horse performance. The laptop comes with multiple warranty options that are usually expected by business organizations. This piece is known for its rigid build, and robust performance. So if that’s what you need, go get it.

Vizio CT14-A2 Ultrabook – This one is elegant, has a metallic build and thin. When it comes to performance, it comes very close to its competitor (in performance) Acer Aspire S5 but is fairly low-priced that the Acer. The laptop lacks certain outward features – an in-built memory card reader, Ethernet jack, backlit keyboard, speaker sound quality, one more USB port (it has 2) etc. But certainly these are not a big deal if your business doesn’t require these features. I’d call it a minimalist performer.

Apple Macbook Pro (15-inch, Retina Display) – How can I complete this list without mentioning the Macbook Pro? If you are into a business laptop which has a robust performance, longer battery life and a great look that you can boast in your business meetings or conferences, yes, you should go for it. Retina display makes great resolution screen on a small-sized laptop possible. The machine boots and is ready in about a few seconds; wakes instantaneously from sleep and can stay asleep for 30 days with your work intact. The battery life is amazing (do I have to say this?) and yes it has a backlit keyboard. The only thing is that some of  your apps may have to be updated to be compatible with the retina display.

Top 5 Options for Tablet Purchase

We are living in the age where tablets are gaining popularity. The drastic improvement in memory technologies and advancements in processing technologies have enabled the development of handheld computing devices, called tablets.

Let us check the top 5 tablets in terms of their performance –

You can avail storage capacities of 16 or 32 or 64 GB depending on your budget. The tablet is enabled with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The camera’s image quality is rated 4 out of 5. Even though the gadget is bet heavier than its predecessor, it has all the possibilities to attract customers as well as pose challenge for competitors in the market.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE offers attractive features to compete with top brands including Apple and Google. The tablet features HD display, Dolby sound system, dual band and dual antenna and 4G LTE connection. You can purchase the tablet in two storage capacities (either 32 GB or 64 GB). It lets you enjoy crystal clear video calls through Skype. Your kids will fall in love with Kindle Fire with a personalized interface.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE gives you access to a large number of movies, television shows, games, magazines, books (PDF and audio) and music files. You can save a lot towards the carrier cost in the first year. It has fastest Wi-Fi and revolutionary 4G connectivity. The advantage of going with this tablet is the wealth of content which Amazon provides.

Google Nexus 7

Google Nexus 7 comes with high quality hardware that will give you long life. It comes with NFC support, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a large bundle of Google freebies. Since this is a Nexus device, you’ll be guaranteed OS updates from Google, which roll out so much more faster than on other devices.

The tablet signifies Google’s attempt to present the best in class Android powered gadget. Tera 3 quad core processor and high end specifications make Google Nexus 7 a great choice for tablet lovers at an affordable cost of $199 for the 8GB varient. If you’re the type who like carrying around your media collections, you may want to invest a little more for higher storage, since there’s absolutely no way to upgrade the memory on this device.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 is a very light and thin tablet. It comes with a very fine looking aluminium finish. You can enjoy the great display and long battery life.  We did review the older version of the Transformer here months back. You can enjoy games with Tera 3 processor. The advantage with this tablet is the docking station which doubles up as a physical keyboard and an additional battery.  With the keyboard dock, the tablet transforms itself into an ultrabook, which makes typing those long documents and emails so easy. The keyboard dock is not part of the sales package and has to be bought separately.

However, it doesn’t look to challenge the supremacy of the market biggies.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will enhance your creativity to the maximum. The most unique thing about this tab is it’s S-PEN stylus which would allow you to draw & write notes. It is also packed with exclusive quad core processor, latest Android’s Icre-cream sandwich platform.

The micro SD card slot always allows you options to add more storage. The wi-fi feature allows you to get connected to the web at any given moment, along-with multiscreen facility. It’s competitive pricing always is an add-on incentive vis-a-vis other tablets.

So, which one are you buying?

Kindle Fire 2 – Feature Upgrades and Competition

Kindle Fire 2 is all set to be launched with a powerful camera and high resolution display system. By Nov. 2012, Amazon’s Kindle Fire will be celebrating its first birthday and the season should coincide with its successor.

The USP of the new Kindle Fire Tablet will be more powerful and yet thinner and lighter in weight than the current one. A built-in camera with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution will be the main attraction of the new gadget.

Let us explore more about the current Kindle Fire before what to expect from the Kindle Fire 2 which will be launched soon –

Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire, the tablet computer gives you the power to perform most of the day to day task that you perform on a personal computer. Some of them are as follows –

• You can browse, purchase books and movies, watch TV shows and play games on small sized Kindle Fire.
• If you possess Kindle Fire, you can purchase applications of your choice from the Amazon App Store.
• If you are one of the fortunate prime customers of Amazon, you can stream movies directly on the Kindle Fire.
• Compared to iPad, Kindle Fire’s price is very less.
• Kindle Touch and Kindle Keyboard are other versions which are still priced less than Kindle Fire.
• Kindle Fire uses Amazon browser called Amazon Silk. It is boasted that web services will load fast through the browser.
• Kindle Fire is rumored to be priced less than its actual cost price to attract new customers.
• Amazon has alternate plans to compensate that loss by selling content from the store.

The new features of Kindle Fire 2

The new Kindle Fire’s dimensions will be in a similar range as that of iPad 2 and it will be a great facelift from the current Kindle Fire. The current tablet offers resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. In addition to the improvement in the resolutions, the edges will be sharper than before. The aspect ratio of the coming version will be 1.6 whereas the current version holds it at 1.7. When compared to the iPad 3’s resolutions, Kindle Fire stays far behind. It is expected that the new device will be rolled out in September.

In addition to the better resolution, there are rumors that multiple models of the device will be launched, and there’s also rumors of 4G connectivity on the Kindle.

Competition

As per the reports from a different source, Amazon is going to launch two tablet versions. The first one code named, Coyote will be powered by dual core processors and the second tablet code named, Hollywood will be powered by a quad core processor. Regardless of one or two tablets that are being launched, Amazon is going to face stiff competition from iPad and other tablets in the market. It will be a great challenge to defeat feature-rich iPad. Apple is also poised to launch a mini version of iPad which will match the price of the Kindle Fire. It will be a touch task for Amazon to head on with user friendly iPad. The 7″ sized Nexus 7 from Google which had already received great reviews is another great competitor.

Consumers would have plenty of options to choose from in the coming days. The winner would have to have the best of features, technology, user-friendliness and must be ever-innovative. Must say, the tablet war could be more competitive than the smart-phone war. The more competitive it is, the better it would be for you & me.

Top tips and tricks to master your iPad

While there are quite a few tips that are common to both the iPhone and the iPad, here are a few more that could make using your iPad just a little bit more fun and intuitive.

Multitasking Gestures – You can enable multi-tasking gesture controls through General -> Settings -> Multitasking Gestures. By setting toggling multitasking gestures to ON, it is possible to swap 4 to 5 applications on the screen by swapping your fingers.

Wireless Sync  – After plugging the iPad to your personal computer, you should ensure that both iPad and PC are connected to the same wireless network. You should enable iTunes on your PC and then select Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. You should select from the list, the computer with which you wish to connect. All the data between iPad and PC will be synchronized everytime both the computer and the iPad are on the same WiFi network

Data destruction – If your iPad lands into the wrong hands and if you don’t want to let loose the sensitive information contained in it, the only option will be to kill the data. This can be achieved when a person unsuccessfully tries to login after a set number of times. You can select the erase option under Settings -> General -> Password Lock.

Side switch – You can assign different functionality to the side switch. The functionality can be toggled by selecting from the menu, Settings -> General -> Use side switch to. Whatever function you would like to assign to the side switch can be selected at ‘use side switch to’.

Encrypted backup – It is possible to take a backup of your iPad’s data in encrypted form through iTunes. After opening iTunes, select Summary Tab and select the option under ‘Encrypt iPad Backup’.

To set restrictions on usage – You can set restrictions on usage of applications, content, games, etc by using Settings -> General -> Restrictions. You can enable restrictions to whichever application you want.

To bypass the default password – Usually iPad comes with 4 digit default password. You can remove the default password and apply a choice of your own that will be more difficult to crack. This can be achieved through Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock. By setting a new encrypted password, you will be able to encrypt your emails as well.

To remove Wi-Fi network – It is possible that your iPad might have been connected to a Wireless network accidentally. As a matter of fact, the connection will be stored forever in your iPad. If you wish to remove that connection, you can do so by going through Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Choose the Network. Tap the button which says ‘Forget this Network’.

To control iPad notifications – If you wish to control annoying notifications that appear on top of your iPad, you can follow these steps. Settings -> Notifications. Here, you should configure alerts as per your requirements including the audio tone.

Google’s “Project Glass” – How Sci-Fi could it be?

Trust Google to infuse futuristic touch into your normal life and in a way, to continue dreaming!

Just when you thought Google could not awe you anymore; it is back with yet another never-before-seen gadget to blow your minds. The recently launched Google+ page clearly shows that Google is now gearing up to come up with “Project Glass“, which contains every imaginable Sci-Fi feature in it. These Sci-Fi glasses are said to support augmented reality. The glasses will hopefully be available to the larger public as soon as the Google researchers finish testing them and give the green signal. So, guess it’s time to think out of the box than just be satisfied with your everyday entertainment providers like your headset, MP3 player, tablet and smart phone. 2012 might just turn out to be the year you looked into the future.

While the Glasses have been spotted in the wild on Google’s Sergei Brin, have a look at an interview on the Charlie Rose Show with Sebastian Thrun, Founder and Head of Google X, where he actually takes a photo using the prototype Glasses (check the photo, here).

Let’s have a look at what could be the Pros and Cons:

The Pros

  • The main advantage that could make Google’s ‘Project Glass’ so much better than smart phones is the fact that every possible feature that a smart phone can boast of should be accessible in a hands-free manner in these glasses. All you have to do is put them on and a world of possibilities opens up right in front of your eyes.
  • Also, you can directly connect to any social forum (hopefully not limited to Google’s own) to chat with your friends, listen to your favorite songs, take and make calls, click pictures and much more, while being on the move 24/7.
  • Life just becomes so much easier when you don’t have to fumble around in your purse to search for your smart phone. With this device, your hands are never occupied while operating it.

It would not be early to say that Google is all set to start a  revolution with its ‘Project Glass’!

The Cons

  • Imagine walking into a pole, or falling down a pit while walking around looking at and through your glasses!
  • The gadget could comprise a horizontal glass frame which is supposed to snuggly sit on the top of the user’s nose. The right side possesses a wider strip of what looks like a computerized projector. While this not so traditional take on everyday glasses might sound high-class, the framework and the entire look of this device may raise some eyebrows from those who are fashion-conscious. A whole video describing the look of these project glasses can be found in the Google+ page itself.

Google researchers have mentioned their eagerness to make it as user-friendly as possible. Thus, they have requested all the viewers to give their different opinions regarding their latest creation.

It would be interesting to see the people’s reactions towards the not-so-attractive overall look of Google’s Sci-Fi glasses.

If you enjoy the virtual world more than reality, then these project glass should have the power to make all your dreams come true. These glasses are by far the most advanced and ambitious project that Google has come up with.

Cell Phones that will ‘See Through’ Walls

Cell phones are now used extensively for various other reasons in addition to the basic telephone services; take the Camera as an example. In fact, the camera on a mobile phone is one of its main selling points.

A new technology, Superman’s X-Ray Vision (no, not really) could deliver new functionality to the mobile phone’s camera.

This new technological innovation at the University of Texas, Dallas gives an insight that we are not far from the day where we will be able to see through the walls by using our camera. The innovation comprises of two significant advancements in research. Scientists will be able to reach this new milestone by utilizing the unused electromagnetic spectrum and by utilizing the brand new consumer grade microchip. Till now, a terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum was not accessible by chips used in consumer grade gadgets. Terahertz band lies between the microwave and infrared rays, and has the capability to penetrate through physical objects much in the lines of X-Rays.

Signals that travel through mobile phone will also bounce back and these bounced back results will be tracked by CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) based processors. In fact, CMOS processors are the most widely used processors in any consumer grade electronic devices. The sensor present in the chip will be able to remap the image based on the signal that it receives. The advantage with terahertz based processors is that you will be able to generate images with few numbers of lenses. As the number of lenses is less, the size of the camera will be less and it will be easy to implant in a mobile phone. It is also feasible to manufacture cameras in a commercial point of view.

The technological capability to see through walls can also be extended to other kinds of useful applications. There is a possibility to replace traditional X-Rays with Terahertz band. The new technology can also be used to detect fake currencies. As with any new development, there is scope for it’s misuse (we wouldn’t want people to be walking around peeking through walls would we?). The team working on this technology is trying to restrict the usage so that users will not be able to “see through” obstacles if  they are four inches away from the objects. On the other hand, the new technology should be very much appreciated for its unique advantage to explore things in new ways.Take Non-destructive testing as an example; not having to use X-Rays to image objects could have huge health and power usage benefits.

Depreciating Resale Values of Smartphones

While the purchase of iPhones, Androids and other Tablets are on the rise, their resale is also shooting up. Many smartphone users want to upgrade to latest smartphone in the market. However, unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you would probably sell or exchange your old device to buy your newer device, which explains why the reselling of Smart Portable devices is on the rise. The factor of resale directly depends on the depreciation rate of these smartphones. One important point to remember is that, just as with anything else (like your car), all smartphones never depreciate uniformly.

When you  want to sell your smartphone then depreciation value varies depending on the brand. A recent study found that iPhone has a really good resale value while other smartphones like Android, Blackberry, etc fail miserably in their resale value. Even after usage for 12 months or more the resale value of iPhones are as high as 63% while it is just 42% for Android phones. Another interesting fact is that even after 6 months of usage, the resale value of  the iPhone is as high as 89% while other smartphones will go for somewhere around 66%.

Graph of Smartphone Resale Value Depreciation

In a study performed on all the iPhone models, 70 top-selling Androids and 30 top-selling Blackberries, the iPhone swept the competition into the dust pan. This is because of the fact that the hardware of the iPhone is very much in demand. Additionally, there are more people buying iPhones in comparison to other smartphones. These clearly states  that an Apple iPhone is definitely a good investment since you can buy it now and resell it in few months for almost the same price, while this is not the case with Android phones. If you are interested in buying Android phones then make sure you are going to preserve it or use it forever because unlike Apple iPhones, Androids doesn’t have a good resale value. This too varies with the model and brand of the Android device.

Additionally, it is  advisable to buy phone with contract (where applicable), since while reselling breaking your contract and paying termination fees are cheaper than off-contract prices especially for the Androids i.e. it’s more economical to sever your contract than to buy phones devoid of a contract. For instance, even with a $300 premature termination fee, it’s generally $100 cheaper to get a funded phone and sever the contract than buying an unsubsidized phone with no contract. Carriers want you to sign a contract, so they entice users into doing so by subsidizing the price you pay up-front for your smartphone. The high depreciation rate of the Android phone make many models of Android phones more expensive to own per month. However if you calculate the expense of owning per month for an  iPhone, it is pretty low thus making the iPhone the preferred smartphone.

Finally, the resale also depends on the location of users. An interesting study from Priceconomics showed that the users from Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Anchorage, etc, resold iPhones more than those who live in places like New York, New Jersey, Orlando, etc. Do note that this study and all the results are based on the US Market.

As the saying goes, “There is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip“; there are many factors involved between buying a smartphone and reselling it effectively.

Archos Launches the 70b; Low cost Android Tablet

Archos which was present in the electronic industry for the past many years has introduced a new internet tablet. Archos 70b internet tablet which is loaded with Android Honeycomb version is a low-cost tablet priced under $200. The new model will be rolled into the market in January, 2012. Archos had launched 70 IT Gen 8 earlier. Some of the remarkable features present in 70b are upgraded touch screen, 1.2 GHz processor and Android 3.2 aka Honeycomb.

The new Archos 70b supports more than 200,000 Android applications from Android app store. These are versatile applications which include games, books, news and social media applications. The new model has a catchy appearance and also comes in light weight. Archos 70b is not only cheap but also offers enhanced features and capabilities. It comes with 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB Random Access Memory, HDMI output, a high-resolution of 1024 x 600, internal storage of 8 GB and a provision for Micro SD Card reading. Honeycomb version of Android offers user-friendly interface and the process of toggling between applications is easier than ever before. The navigational capabilities are improved with honeycomb version.

The big screen gives you better clarity and you can enjoy by viewing crystal clear photos and videos. You can also share photos with others on various social networking sites with high-speed internet connection. The tablet has 3D graphics accelerator and comes with web browser and email application. The device is portable with the ability to transfer data through SD Card and HDMI port. Archos is present in the market since 1988. It had introduced various audio and video products in its lineage and it is always first to bring new models with new capabilities. To some extent, Archos 70b can be compared to Amazon Kindle Fire and other cheap tablets. Amazon Kindle Fire is equipped with Android 2.3 version and it comes with a custom interface. Kindle Fire supports limited applications and is having access to Amazon App Store only. A similar type of storage capacity is available both in Kindle Fire and Archos 70b. There are some cheap tablets which are even priced below $100 and loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS. Customers should double check the features and facilities available in cheap tablets. By all means, Archos 70b comes out be the cheapest on all counts including price, features and capabilities.

Critics feel that Archos should improve in providing support to its products. In order to attract more customers both technical and customer support service should gear up to meet the coming challenges. Another negative aspect is being fitted with 512 MB RAM which is too little to handle some complex games and multimedia applications. A minimum of 1 GB will fare better. As smartphones have made their way with Android OS similarly more tablets may be launched in future loaded with Android OS. Android applications have made life easy, fun and created a new way of exploring the world and building relations.

You need to wait for a few more weeks, to know about the success of Archos 70b.
