Test your Knowledge – The iOS Quiz Up App now on Android

Want to find out how smart your friends are? Well, you now have a perfect solution if you are using an Android phone. One the most popular iOS games has made its landing on Android. If you are not aware, Quiz Up is an amazing quizzing game with hundreds of topics and over 200,000 questions. So, this is one game that could really test your quizzing abilities.

To start you could sign in using either Facebook, Google+ or email. Once logged in, you could either choose an opponent from your friends list or let the system pick a random player for you. As you progress through the game, you are awarded some weird and wacky badges, which can be used as your title. The user interface is pretty slick too and the profile page reminds me of Path. For your profile, you can choose background wallpaper and a profile pic on top of it.

The topics range from Music to The Dark Knight Trilogy. From General Knowledge to even Mean Girls. The possibilities are limitless. So this game can keep you going for a long time. Each game consists of 7 rounds with 10 seconds for each round. The scoring depends on how quickly you answer. Don’t worry if you fall back in certain rounds because the last round has double the points to let you catch up. There is an option to surrender a game, but you don’t wanna do that. Do you?

Lost a match? Don’t fret. There is an option for a rematch, provided the opponent agrees to it. You could also challenge an opponent, the difference from a rematch being you are not playing parallel with your opponent. Your opponent can take up the challenge once you have completed your part.

The one drawback of this game is that the questions do tend to repeat but that’s bound to happen and they are not that frequent.

Sounds exciting eh? I’m hooked on it. So, download today and get quizzing!

Nokia Refocus App now available on Windows Phone Store

A few weeks back we told you that Nokia had some camera tricks up their sleeves for Lumia users through their Refocus app. Well if your phone has been updated to the latest Lumia Amber update, you can head out to the Windows phone store and download the Nokia Refocus app on your phone and start taking pictures.

How the app works is by taking around 3-8 photos at different focus points when you click a snap, and then merges them into a magical snap which you can play with the different focus points later on.So make sure you have your subject close to you before taking a snap and keep your phone steady while the snap is being clicked for best results.

Once you’ve clicked your snap, you can share this with your friends by uploading the snaps and sharing the link. The photo is first uploaded to Skydrive and then to a page on refocus.nokia.com where even your friends can try out different focus points in your photo.

Apart from this feature, Nokia has also bundled a Colour Pop feature which allows you to selectively retain colors in certain areas of your photo and convert the rest to black and white for an artistic twist to the photo.

The Nokia Refocus app is available to all Lumia phones which have a PureView camera. Here are the models for quick reference – Lumia 920, 925, 928, 1020 and 1520. So if you own one of these models, head out to the Windows Phones store and take the app for a spin.

Samsung to Start Offering BBM services on their Galaxy Devices Soon

In what seems to have been ages back, Blackberry did announce that their BBM (Blackberry Messaging) services would come to Android devices. It wasn’t clear how they would be managing this yet. Now it looks like Blackberry is tying up with OEMs to bundle their BBM services for their devices.

Samsung is the first to announce that they’ll be offering the BBM app to users of their Galaxy Range of devices soon via the Google Play and Samsung App Store. According to Samsung’s Press Release, it looks like they’ll be rolling this out to their African customers first.

Apart from the fact that the BBM app is going to be free for Samsung customer, there’s no concrete dates on availability or if and when the rest of the world could get their hand on the BBM app. So soon BBM is going to go head to head in competition with other multi-platform messaging services like WhatsApp and the rest.

I’m not yet sure if this is a good strategy for Blackberry.  I know for a fact that a lot of people stick to Blackberry devices primarily for the BBM service, so would  unbundling BBM affect Blackberry’s sales? Let’s see where this leads.

Quip Wordprocessor for iPad, iPhone, Android and Desktop

Launched by a startup with ex-Facebook  and an ex-Google team members, Quip relooks at the age old word processor. The big name in Quip is  Bret Taylor who was the CTO of Facebook for a while. Word processing has been ingrained in everyone’s mind as being a task for desktops, and not mobiles. Quip wants to disprove that and mobile users do as much work as possible from their mobiles as well.

What I love about Quip is the simplicity of it. Most word processing software these days have complicated options to make a document look like it’s been edited and laid out for printing. It’s not too great with the medium of sharing is the web and mobile, since print’s on the decline.

Quip provides an easy interface to edit your document with minimal formatting, so you can export it out to once your work is complete. Of course, not everyone would agree with me on this. The simplicity could be a put-off for someone who lives in let’s say Microsoft Word or Open/Libre Office universe. For me it’s a distraction free editor which allows me to focus on the content, rather than the formatting and how it looks.

Wait that’s not all, whether you’re working on an article or writing up a shopping list you can also invite your friends or family to collaborate with you by sharing a folder of documents with them. They can edit the documents and you see the changes real-time on all their devices and have a conversion with them by messaging them. This is similar to the collaboration features which Google Docs provides.

Quip comes with a web version on quip.com and has their official apps for the iPad and iPhone in the iTunes Market. Android users can try out the alpha version of the app from Google Play. The alpha version on Android doesn’t have the ability to edit the docs yet, but it should come in a future update.

Quip’s service is currently free to use for consumers and small companies which let you collaborate with up to 5 users. They offer paid services to bigger companies at $12 per month for each user. Scroll down for the Download links for your device, and if you’re on your desktop point your browser to quip.com to get started online as well. Once you’ve used it, let us know your thoughts on Quip by leaving us a comment below.

Buttons and Scissors Logic Game for iOS and Android

The game Buttons and Scissors is logic based game, where the main aim is to cut off all the buttons from a piece of Denim Cloth. As easy as that sounds, things can a little tricky as you progress through levels. Here’s a quick set of instructions on how to get rid of those buttons in Pictures: Buttons and Scissors - Instructions You can cut off buttons of the same color which fall in a straight line, and keep doing that till the board is cleared. You may end up making moves which you may want to backtrack, so the game provides an undo button which is on the lower right corner of the screen. Oh and did I mention that the faster you complete the level, the more you score.

There are quite a few levels to go though within the game. There are 200 levels for each the 5×5, 6×6 and 7×7 grid sizes. That makes 600 levels in total. If you run through all these, you also have the option of buying 600 more levels via in-app purchase. You can also buy solutions to levels, in case you get stumped on the way.

Nomad Travel App For Android Travel Enthusiasts

Nomad Travel App - location detailsI was introduced to Nomad by a friend and ever since being the travel enthusiast that I am, hooked on to it! The travel app is released as a beta version which provides information about places to travel around Bangalore. According to Mink 7, the app developers, they plan to open the platform to users so that they can crowd-source new location content from travel enthusiasts using their app.

What I love about the app is its easy-to-use navigation, pleasing design and colours, beautiful pictures, well thought of filters, glitch free operation, a link to maps & driving directions and above all the range of places covered! And to think I’d seen most places around!

What prompted the app developers to spend time and build this app? Harsha M.V. from Mink 7 has the answer to that, “Being an Travel enthusiast and foodie we travel far and wide in search for adventure and food. Having run a 8750+ Bakasura community for close to two years. We are looking to exploring food outside the city as well – resulting in weekend trips to places like Mysore, Mangalore, Udupi, Ambur for food. We wanted a handy source to help us plan our trip and found that the existing solutions are incomplete and are more of hobby projects. So we went ahead and build our solution which turned out to be very helpful for our friends and family as well. Having Experience in Product Development and particularly User Experience and Design we were sure we can stand out from day one.

List of Locations in Nomad Travel AppAbout opening their travel app to other locations and how they plan on getting location information, Harsha said, “Food and Travel is something most of the masses love to indulge in and we are sure that crowd sourcing the content wont be hard. We are trying to figure out the most effective way to do the same. Once our Platform will go live and we will be a global app not just other parts of India. We see that France, US, Spain, China are the most visited Countries in the world year on year.

While its not perfect yet, it certainly can get there soon and with that belief here are a few additions I can think of, introduce ratings by users (provisions to include user comments/photos), include more filters (user rating, kid friendly, elderly friendly/wheelchair access, best time to visit with a month-wise selection choice) and provide more information (hotels/lodges, public transport, food).

Also, having travelled around a bit, I see a few key places are missing and it would be a good idea to add them right away – Bannerghatta national park, Mysore, Bylakuppe monastery, Chitradurga fort, Puttaparthi, Chikmagalur, Mangalore & around, Pondicherry, Coimbatore, Mahabalipuram, Kodaikanal, Pattadkal, Badami, Mantralaya, Karwar, Udupi and Srirangapatna.

All said, its going to be my one stop solution for a quite a few weekends from now…long drives here I come! Thank you Nomad for making it more interesting & easier to travel around namma Bengaluru.

Strongly recommend this to every Bengaluru local/ visitor – a MUST HAVE :)

Rescube – A Puzzle solving game for iOS and Android

Screenshot_6

Rescube is an addictive puzzle solving game which can keep you occupied during those daily commutes or while waiting for a friend to turn up. Gameshastra, the developers of the app had initially launched this game on the iTunes store  in November last year and have quickly followed up by releasing the Android version of the game.

The main objective of the game is to get  Gisu, the ‘cute little’ alien, to the required parts to repair his ship. You can help Gisu by moving around the blocks so that Gisu has a clear path to be reunited with the ship’s spare parts. You get extra points if you manage to do this in the least number of moves. The least number of moves gets you a 3 star level complete achievement. If you don’t manage to get 3 stars, check the end-of-level screen and the number of moves you took vs the “Best Moves”, which is the minimum which you have to aim for when you replay the level.

The paid version offers over 50 levels of puzzles for you to solve, without the ad nags, which gives you quite a lot of gameplay time. You can also revisit levels to better your score by increasing your star score per game, giving some amount of replay value to the game. The Paid versions of the game on both platfroms also don’t cost much just $0.99 (or around Rs. 50). So take the free (ad-supported)version  for a spin to get a hang of the game and then go Ad-free and get the paid version, it doesn’t cost much!

You can brag about your achievements by posting these to your friends on Twitter and Facebook. iOS users also get their achievements posted to their Game Center. For a quick game trailer, check out the video after the download links:

Backup your Android Device to the Cloud using G Cloud Backup

When we talk about backing up our Android devices, the Android power users go in for tools like Nandroid, Titanium Backup and the likes. They are pretty good as backup tools as well, but regular users usually get intimidated by these tools. If you are looking for an easy way to backup your device here’s an app just for you.

G Cloud backup is effortless and an automatic way to backup all your Android’s data to the cloud. No rooting or special requirements are needed for this app to do it’s magic.  G Cloud  backups  your

  • Call logs
  • Contacts
  • Messages
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Music
  • Documents
  • Apps settings
  • Browser bookmarks and history

All you need to do is to install G Cloud on your phone and let it do the rest in the background. To use G Cloud you’ll need to create an account to get started. The free account gives you 1 GB of cloud backup storage for you to use. You can also opt for  10GB of storage for  $0.99/month.

Since I usually backup my pictures to Dropbox, I went ahead and set G Cloud Backup to backup everything except docs, videos and pictures on my free account. 1GB is more than enough for all these settings. Once setup, the app keeps backing up your data to the cloud on a regular basis. You can change the backup time and other app options from the settings menu. to conserve your mobile data usage, you can also setup the app to backup data only when you connected to WiFi, make sure this setting is on if you plan to backup your images and videos as well.

The best part of the app is when you have to  switch your phones (if you loose it or get a new one). All you need to do is to install G Cloud on your new phone and login, the app takes care of downloading all your data on the new phone and the new phone is setup and ready for use. Since call logs and SMS messages also are restored, the new phone continues where you left off on the older one. No sweat and missing messages or contacts this way.

Nokia City Lens is an Augmented reality (AR) app from Nokia which is exclusively available for their Lumia range of devices. The newly release version is a huge improvement over the older version we had covered. All you need to do is to start the app and point the phone towards the are you are interested in and on your screen, you can find the area around you overlaid with information and points of interest around you.

Now if you find a place which interests you just click on that to get more information about that place, contact information, booking a restaurant table, navigate using maps and more.
