Photography, image search and more on apps this week

ProShot

ProShot by Rise Up Games started out a while back as a fully featured camera app for Windows Phone back in 2012. It launched on iOS in 2014 and is now available on Android as well (for devices running 5.1 and up). On compatible phones, it gives you access to full manual control, editable presets, and on Android, RAW support (assuming your phone fully supports the camera2 API. Check the link above for the full feature listing for each platform.

Image Searcher

Looking for that Gif to send to a chat app? Or an image? Why bother searching and then downloading it when you can do it directly from the media share feature in the chat app? Your preferred chat app doesn’t have such a feature? Try Image Searcher. Just remember, don’t set a default while trying to share an image and it’s all good.

Google Drive on Windows Phone

Sure, Google doesn’t really bother supporting Windows Phone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use certain apps. If you are a Google Drive user, check out the unofficial drive client.. Check out the full review on All About Windows Phone.

Polarr

What started out as a browser based photography app has now evolved into a free iOS app (with in app purchases, of course). It’s pretty feature rich and allows you to create and save your own presets as well.

Football Frenzy – Apps for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone

With the UEFA Champions League and Europa Cup Finals just around the corner and with the FIFA World Cup just a month away, here’s a few apps that are must haves to keep track of the news and updates.

Forza Football

Forza FootballForza Football recently underwent a transformation, with a new name (it was formerly called Live Score Addicts), new icon and with a news section added in. It’s the app that I use, and it’s a brilliant, must have app.

You can control the update rate, from an addict friendly 5 seconds to a battery friendly 180 seconds. You can select leagues, teams and tournaments to follow, and it’ll even suggest the league and teams based on your location during initial setup. This includes almost every league and tournament in the world along with international competitions. You can customize what updates you want: Cards, Goals, Game start/half-time/full-time notifications and other events. You have league tables, player stats and much more. But the best part has to be the fact that you can mute notifications for a preset time period or during the nights.

Check them out over at footballaddicts.com

ESPN FCESPN FC

ESPN recently launched an updated app for the World Cup and certain leagues and clubs. It also has video highlights, which unfortunately, is US only.

The Leagues that are supported so far include the top English, German, French, Mexican and American leagues (and a few more), along with the top tournaments. You can get play-by-play updates, match analysis, transfer news bits and more.

Sorry Windows Phone users. You could try out ESPN Sportscenter:

FIFA

When in doubt, get the official app from the governing body itself: the official FIFA app. You get coverage of pretty much all the leagues and cups. I was quite surprised when the app turned out to be actually nice.

Apart from the news, game schedules and scores, the app also has a section outlining FIFA’s various initiatives.

Again, sorry windows phones fans, the app is iOS and Android only. For some weird reason, they don’t have an universal iOS app.

ScoreMobile FC

ScoreMobile FC, so far at least, has been the only app that I have found that exists on almost every platform. It’s available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone & Blackberry (10 and OS7). It even used to exist on Symbian, until Nokia shut down the Ovi Store (you could probably search for a .sis file, I haven’t linked to one since I am not sure which is the right forum to look at for Symbian nowadays). While the standard features (score updates, game events, match schedules, etc) are present on all platforms, there are limitations on some platforms, primarily when it comes to push notifications.

For Pre Blackberry 10 Devices, get the app hereBB10 users, the app has been renamed and is now called theScore. Get it here.

LiveSoccer World Cup Edition

A relatively new app on Android, one that I have not extensively used, is LiveSoccer. Honestly, it’s Football, not Soccer. But the app works pretty well and has the main functionalities that one would expect, with notifications, match details, schedules & news.

Logitech PowerShell launches in India for iPhone Gamers

Last week we were invited to attend the launch of the Logitech PowerShell in India. Mr Ashok Jangra, Cluster Marketing Manager, India & SW Asia formally launched the device. The device is essentially an iPhone only gaming controller. Powershell 1 Physically the device tries to mimic the likes of the Playstation Portable, and to an extent one could easily mistake for a PSP with the iPhone plugged in. The device comes with an analog d-pad, shoulder triggers and a button cluster to give you a console like feeling. The device is pretty easy to use; one needs to just place the device in the dock and you are ready to go.Logitech PowerShell The device supports a pretty exhaustive list of games, Sonic and Overkill 2 being our favourites. For more information, you can check out the Logitech PowerShell website for a complete list of supported games. List of Supported Games With the little time we got to play with the device we did enjoy using it, but we would have preferred a joystick for shooting games as it was very difficult to focus on a target with the d-pad. Though the device offers buttons to control to play games, it doesn’t offer control over the game menu options, which has to be done only by touching the screen. This is not really a deal breaker, though a joystick would be very useful for menu controls as well as gaming. Powershell 2 Talking about daily usage, with the iPhone plugged the PowerShell doesn’t really compromise on the phones features, you can still make your calls, listen to music and even take photos. Logitech has also provided a neat little headphone extension jack and also an extension to charge the device as you play. The device comes with a built-in 1500mAh battery for added game time. We did notice that the build quality isn’t up to the mark and doesn’t feel like it is built to last. Also, with rumors of the next Apple iPhone being bigger than the current 4.5” the PowerShell may not be really Future Proof. The device was launched at a sticker price of Rs.8990, but one should be able to find one for a lesser price in the market.

Test your Knowledge – The iOS Quiz Up App now on Android

Want to find out how smart your friends are? Well, you now have a perfect solution if you are using an Android phone. One the most popular iOS games has made its landing on Android. If you are not aware, Quiz Up is an amazing quizzing game with hundreds of topics and over 200,000 questions. So, this is one game that could really test your quizzing abilities.

To start you could sign in using either Facebook, Google+ or email. Once logged in, you could either choose an opponent from your friends list or let the system pick a random player for you. As you progress through the game, you are awarded some weird and wacky badges, which can be used as your title. The user interface is pretty slick too and the profile page reminds me of Path. For your profile, you can choose background wallpaper and a profile pic on top of it.

The topics range from Music to The Dark Knight Trilogy. From General Knowledge to even Mean Girls. The possibilities are limitless. So this game can keep you going for a long time. Each game consists of 7 rounds with 10 seconds for each round. The scoring depends on how quickly you answer. Don’t worry if you fall back in certain rounds because the last round has double the points to let you catch up. There is an option to surrender a game, but you don’t wanna do that. Do you?

Lost a match? Don’t fret. There is an option for a rematch, provided the opponent agrees to it. You could also challenge an opponent, the difference from a rematch being you are not playing parallel with your opponent. Your opponent can take up the challenge once you have completed your part.

The one drawback of this game is that the questions do tend to repeat but that’s bound to happen and they are not that frequent.

Sounds exciting eh? I’m hooked on it. So, download today and get quizzing!

Jailbreaking iOS 7 on your iPad

Evad3rs have finally announced the much awaited jailbreak for iOS 7. Since I have the iPad 3 myself, I immediately decided to jailbreak it. A few words of caution though: evad3rs have mentioned that there could be boot loop problems even after a successful jailbreak on devices which have been updated OTA. This post  provides instructions based on the Windows version of evasi0n7 on jailbreaking iOS 7 on your iPad. You can follow the same steps while using the Mac version too.

[alert style=”1″]Disclaimer: Jailbreaking iOS 7 on your device will void your warranty. We do not take responsible for any issues you may face after you jailbreak your device[/alert]

I learnt this the hard way, having upgraded to 7.0.4 OTA my device was stuck on boot after a successful jailbreak. So if you are on pre iOS7 or 7.0.0, upgrade your device to 7.0.4 through iTunes. If you are already on 7.0.4 through OTA, just follow Apple’s guidelines to restore iOS device to factory settings. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

Once you’re done you are now ready to jailbreak your iOS device.

So now, here the process – It is not very complicated and I just followed the steps provided by evad3rs team.

  • First, backup your device through iTunes or iCloud.
  • Download evasion 7 from http://evasi0n.com/. Unzip the folder
  • Open evasion and hit jailbreak.

  • The device will boot several times.
  • You will be asked to unlock device and tap the evasion icon on your iPad.

  • A confirmation message will be shown once jailbreaking iOS 7 is complete

It’s been a couple of days since I tried jaibreaking iOS 7 on my iPad 3rd Gen and I haven’t really encountered any major issues. So, happy jailbreaking!

Careful where you charge, your iPhone can be hacked by a malicious Charger

It’s not just apps from app stores which can infect your phone these days, a bunch of Georgia Tech hackers at the Black Hat US conference have revealed that the just the act using your phone while it’s charging from an unknown charger can let hackers in. While the iPhone is considered to be quite a secure device, their technique showed how easy it is infect your phone by plugging it in.

They used BeagleBoard to create a malicious charger, which they call the Mactan. When an iPhone user connects their phone to a Mactan ‘charger’, they run the risk of having their phone compromised. In the demo which they performed when the user unlocks the phone while it’s on charge, the Mactan  replaced the Facebook app on the phone with a fake version which had a malicious payload.

The hacker stated that the payload could contain malicious code which takes the screenshots when passwords are entered, send data from the phone to a remote server, and much more! If you’ve not jail-broken your phone, it doesn’t matter – this exploit can still work on your device, and did I mention that all this takes under 60 seconds? Scary Stuff!

Luckily it looks like Apple will be rolling in a patch for this in iOS 7 which is due to be released shortly. Till then stay safe and don’t charge from unknown charging stations, who know what’s lurking behind those wires. We leave you with a parting thought from the makers of Mactan – “While Mactans was built with limited amount of time and a small budget, we also briefly consider what more motivated, well-funded adversaries could accomplish.”

Quip Wordprocessor for iPad, iPhone, Android and Desktop

Launched by a startup with ex-Facebook  and an ex-Google team members, Quip relooks at the age old word processor. The big name in Quip is  Bret Taylor who was the CTO of Facebook for a while. Word processing has been ingrained in everyone’s mind as being a task for desktops, and not mobiles. Quip wants to disprove that and mobile users do as much work as possible from their mobiles as well.

What I love about Quip is the simplicity of it. Most word processing software these days have complicated options to make a document look like it’s been edited and laid out for printing. It’s not too great with the medium of sharing is the web and mobile, since print’s on the decline.

Quip provides an easy interface to edit your document with minimal formatting, so you can export it out to once your work is complete. Of course, not everyone would agree with me on this. The simplicity could be a put-off for someone who lives in let’s say Microsoft Word or Open/Libre Office universe. For me it’s a distraction free editor which allows me to focus on the content, rather than the formatting and how it looks.

Wait that’s not all, whether you’re working on an article or writing up a shopping list you can also invite your friends or family to collaborate with you by sharing a folder of documents with them. They can edit the documents and you see the changes real-time on all their devices and have a conversion with them by messaging them. This is similar to the collaboration features which Google Docs provides.

Quip comes with a web version on quip.com and has their official apps for the iPad and iPhone in the iTunes Market. Android users can try out the alpha version of the app from Google Play. The alpha version on Android doesn’t have the ability to edit the docs yet, but it should come in a future update.

Quip’s service is currently free to use for consumers and small companies which let you collaborate with up to 5 users. They offer paid services to bigger companies at $12 per month for each user. Scroll down for the Download links for your device, and if you’re on your desktop point your browser to quip.com to get started online as well. Accessorise and Protect your phone with Case Mate

Your smartphone really is your portable computing device, your camera, media player, and so much more. You’ve probably invested a lot of money in your smartphone, both for the hardware and for the services and apps that you’ve purchased. You’ve probably also spent a lot of time setting it up so that it’s just right for you to use. Now all it takes is a little slip and what you have, is a broken phone (most probably the screen), a trip to the service center, and a hefty charge for replacement parts.

The most practical way to protect your phone is to put a case on it. It’ll probably also set you apart from the hundreds of thousands of people who have the exact same device. There’s a plethora of accessory makers out there, but the one that I’ve used for almost every smartphone that I’ve owned is Case Mate.

Now, what I generally do is buy the case from the Case Mate website or from Clove and pay extra for shipping to India. What I didn’t know though, was that as of late last year, Case Mate has an online presence in India. So that’s two benefits: It’s cheaper than buying it abroad and you’ll get it quicker (I really need to go and run a quick calculation to see how much I would have saved had I known about this).

They have a huge range of series, so regardless of what kind of cover you want, you’ll probably find something you like, from the Barely There series to the Pop Cases (with a kick stand to prop your device) to the  Tough Cases (which I personally prefer). You can also customize your case.

So head on over to Case Mate and a have a look and buy from their site. You can also follow them on Twitter and on Facebook. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Buttons and Scissors Logic Game for iOS and Android

The game Buttons and Scissors is logic based game, where the main aim is to cut off all the buttons from a piece of Denim Cloth. As easy as that sounds, things can a little tricky as you progress through levels. Here’s a quick set of instructions on how to get rid of those buttons in Pictures: Buttons and Scissors - Instructions You can cut off buttons of the same color which fall in a straight line, and keep doing that till the board is cleared. You may end up making moves which you may want to backtrack, so the game provides an undo button which is on the lower right corner of the screen. Oh and did I mention that the faster you complete the level, the more you score.

There are quite a few levels to go though within the game. There are 200 levels for each the 5×5, 6×6 and 7×7 grid sizes. That makes 600 levels in total. If you run through all these, you also have the option of buying 600 more levels via in-app purchase. You can also buy solutions to levels, in case you get stumped on the way.

Download and have fun!

News Republic – Your News Fix for iOS, Android & Windows Phone

I love getting my News fix throughout the day, when I’ve got a moment to spare. My usual favorites are Flipboard and Zite, but I’m always looking out  new ways to discover news instead of just sticking to my standard reading list.

News Republic’s latest version has just been added to my list after more than three weeks of using it. I seem to be favoring it more than Flipboard on my iPad. News Republic has quite a few topic you can follow and get updates on your opening screen. Since it’s a news reading app, it serves it function well, and I won’t go into much details there. I’ll just highlight two of my favorite features of the app.

List based viewer
List based viewer

One of the features I really Like about the app are the list based news viewer, which allows reading of the news item, and give a list of other news on the left side. So instead of flipping through stuff I don’t want to read, I can go directly and select the ones I want to. Saves a lot of time on a hype day, with a lot of sites publishing the same news items, and I really don’t want to read the same thing again and again.

Take your News offline
Take your News offline

Another feature I really love is the Offline reading capability. Given that my iPad is just the WiFi model, this is a killer feature which downloads news items from my favorite topics and has it ready for my reading pleasure during my commutes to work. To save bandwidth which downloading items offline, I can also choose to not download images.

Personally, I feel that News Republic on the  iPad really Rocks! Of course, not all versions of the app are equal. Your mileage will vary on the Android and Windows Phone version, so try them out and see if you like it.
